Altair 10 x 60mm Straight Through Illuminated Finder Scope Kit 2'' Focuser With Bracket & Base
Zoom  Zoom

The Altair Astro 10x60mm finder scope is an upgrade to standard 50mm finders. It delivers almost half again as much light to your eye, resulting in a brighter image.

The straight-through version is designed for visual use. It has a large easy-to-grip 2" helical focuser with an illuminated eyepiece, producing 10x magnification. The focuser accepts standard 2" and 1.25" astro eyepieces.

The Altair Astro 60mm finder has many more features than the average finder scope:

Optical features:
The high quality 23mm 1.25 FMC illuminated eyepiece has good eye relief for glasses-wearers, and a wide field of view. It has a side-port to screw in the variable darkfield illuminated reticule, and the finder itself can be very easily focused, using the included helical focuser.
The included dark field illuminator has a variable brightness setting, and the etched cross hair reticule can easily be seen against the background sky, unlike other finders with dark cross-hairs. What's more, the cross-hair reticule is visible during the daytime without illumination.
The higher 10x magnification is better for astro-imagers who want to centre an object more precisely in the camera field-of-view, yet the field of view is still very large.
Mechanical features:
A large 2" Helical Focuser with 2" to 1.25" adapter, which can be rotated 360 and locked in position.
The included quick-release finder base has 30mm width cross-slots with a 5mm width, allowing mounting to most telescopes on the market with M4-M5 screws.
The base-bracket is cross-slotted, so the finder scope can be mounted on telescopes with different mounting hole orientations (i.e. parallel or 90 degrees to the optical axis).
The mini-dovetail wedge on the finder stalk will even fit the existing finder bracket on most telescopes directly, without the base. This includes most older-model Skywatcher finder bases which are cast as part of the focuser.
All objective lenses are anti-reflection coated, and the tube and dew-shield are internally blackened and baffled to increase contrast.
The finder bracket rings are light, yet rigid enough to keep good alignment. Nylon tipped screws are included, which won't damage the paint on the machined aluminium optical tube.
Altair 60mm finder package contents (model AF60-STR-2HF-IR):
Optical tube with 60mm F3.75 fully multi coated doublet lens, rotating / locking rear assembly.
Large smooth 2" helical focuser with compression ring.
2" to 1.25" eyepiece adapter with brass compression ring for standard astro-eyepieces.
23mm wide field eyepiece with illuminated glass engraved reticule.
All-metal variable brightness LED illuminator plugs into the eyepiece. Requires 2x LR44 or GPA76 batteries.*
Special dual-clamp mounting bracket fits most telescopes on the market and all Altair telescopes.
2x machined aluminium tube rings with 6x Nylon tipped adjustment screws.
Mini-rail to connect the tube rings.
Comes in a tough cardboard box with foam cutout, which is worth keeping for storage.
Q: Can the straight-through finder be used as a guide scope for autoguiding? This finder scope can be used for autoguiding with wide field lenses and telescopes up to about 400mm. For longer focal lengths, a helical focuser is not the best solution for auto-giuding. It is, however a very good solution for use with an eyepiece. If you're considering a finder to use with your autoguider, we recommend the Altair Miniguider and Right Angle Correct Image (RACI) finder which includes a Precision Locking Camera Focuser. This focuser is more rigid than any helical focuser, and cannot become de-focused once locked. In fact, the precision locking camera focuser was invented by Altair Astro as a better alternative to helical focusers found on finder scopes. We recommend the straight-through finder with helical focuser only used for wide field imaging because it's really intended for visual use.

Q: OK so can I attach the Altair precision camera focuser to the straight-through finder for autoguiding? No you can't, because the rear assembly has a large diameter rear thread incompatible with the Miniguider Precision Camera Focuser. You need to buy the Altair Minigiuder or the Altair RACI finder (which has the correctly threaded rear assembly) if you want to autoguide with maximum precision up to 1.2m focal length - or even longer with special guide scope rings.
