Altair Lightwave 60mm ED-T Triplet Refractor With 2'' Focuser & Case
Zoom  Zoom

The Altair Lightwave 60mm F7 is a portable triplet ED refractor for imaging or visual use in a very small, light weight package.

This makes it the perfect "grab 'n go" airline portable telescope for wide field observing and imaging.

The design objective was to keep weight low for portability, while adding a quality rack and pinion focuser. One realises how far modern lens manufacture has progressed when you consider you can buy an ED triplet for the price of a "boutique" eyepiece!

The triplet F7 ED triplet optics give good colour correction and a wide field at low powers makes the telescope ideal for surfing star clouds, the milky way, and brighter deep sky objects from your dark sky location. The moon offers plenty of detail with numerous craters visible. Jupiter's cloud bands and the four principle Galilean Moons are visible as are Saturn's rings. With a solar filter, and you can view sunspots and surface details on the sun too. (Remember never view with sun with a telescope without a filter!).

For terrestrial use as a "spotter", this multi-purpose instrument let's you use "astro" eyepieces, which are generally a lot better than spotting scope eyepieces. Imagine being able to take a small triplet telescope to some truly dark-sky locations, like up a mountain, to the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Karoo in South Africa, or on Safari - where it can be used for birding and game spotting with a wide field astro-eyepiece. In fact we took a prototype on holiday and did just that. We viewed animals drinking at a water-hole at dusk at arm's length with a wide field astro eyepiece. Later on, we swept along the galactic core star clouds in Sagittarius under completely dark skies - a most enjoyable experience.

Several features make the Altair Lightwave 60mm a solid choice for imaging or visual use. The dual speed rack and pinion focuser with a 1:10 ratio fine adjustment knob makes accurate focusing easy. That means easier focusing at the eyepiece, or with your camera CCD chip (focusing is especially easy in "live view mode" on a DSLR). A rack 'n pinion gear improves the "lifting power" of the focuser, making it similar to a large Crayford, but keeping weight and size down to fulfil the portability requirement. A protective foam padded aluminium-finish carry case protects the scope for travel.

Adapters: The rear of the focuser sports a M54x0.75mm thread, enabling direct connection of several cameras and filter wheels and keeping the aperture as clear as possible. The telescope includes an M54x0.75" to standard 2" push-fit adapter enabling the use of standard astro 2" eyepieces and diagonals to come to focus. What's more, the adapter has 3x clamping screws with 120 degree separation (one thumbscrew and two slotted), to ensure a rigid connection and a tight grip on your visual or imaging accessories. To make the system even more compatible with modern imaging equipment, an optional M54x0.75 to M48x0.75 (e.g. Standard filter thread) adapter is also available. This lets you screw the Altair M48 variable spacer system directly to the focuser, to connect M48 CCD cameras, filter wheels and field flatteners, or your digital SLR via any standard M48 DSLR camera adapter.

Mounts: For imaging, this telescope enables you to use a very light weight mount indeed so just about any mount from iOptron SmartEQ size upwards will do, and unguided exposures are possible provided you polar align accurately. For visual use or solar observing, this telescope is an ideal companion for the iOptron Cube PRO and this would be an airline portable package similar in size to a medium camera zoom lens.
