High-resolution optics that realize the full potential of the zoom format. Because, finally, this is a zoom eyepiece designed for the advanced amateur astronomer who is uncompromising in his or her optical performance specifications. Performance is fully consistent with the finest fixed focal length eyepieces. With its high-eyepoint optics and foldable rubber eyecup the Meade Series 4000 Zoom Eyepiece is comfortably usable by eyeglass wearers; even with eyeglasses the entire field of view is easily observable. The Meade Series 4000 Zoom is an excellent addition to telescopes of all types, brands, and price levels, whether 60mm refractor, 8" Dobsonian, 90mm ETX, or 12" LX200 Schmidt–Cassegrain.

Sky at Night Magazine group test winner! 93% score "For us the Meade gave the most pleasing views with all our test telescopes, and so is deservedly the winner"

Conceived by one of the world's leading designers of photo–optical instruments, this 7–element system provides an apparent field of 40° at the 24mm setting, increasing continuously to a 55° field at 8mm. The internal zoom optics move on smooth, precisely machined surfaces which maintain optical collimation at all zoom settings. A scale graduated in 1mm units indicates the zoom focal length in operation. All lenses are multi–coated for maximum light transmission and image contrast, while minimizing internal reflections. The chromed brass barrel is threaded for filters.

Handy Zoom - can attach a DSLR
Sunday, 30 December 2018  |

I have had this zoom since September this year and it is quite versatile. Clear and sharp images across the FoV. It gives a lot of 'eyepieces' in a small package.

Better FoV (55 deg) at shorter eyepiece focal lengths (8-12 mm) and only about 40 at the longer FL (20-24 mm), eye relief is also a bit limited at the shorter focal lengths.

As it is clearly indexed in mm from 8 to 24 it is very useful for finding the magnification that is ideal and then swapping out for a fixed eyepiece, with wider FoV and longer eyerelief, if you are going to be observing at that magnification for an extended period.

NOTE: If you remove the rubber eye shield (carefully) you can with the correct adapter (T-ring) attach a DSLR for afocal astrophotography.

Every enthusiast should have a good zoom in their eyepiece collection, and this is a decent one for the money. Happy with it.

Great for the money
Tuesday, 11 December 2018  |

I've had this eyepiece for nearly a year and as a beginner astronomer, this hits the mark, allowed me to faintly see some of the larger deep sky objects.
Definitely helped with alignment when entering alignment stars.
The field of view is slightly limiting, but as expecting with any zoom, compromises are expected.
All using Skywatcher 130 PDS scope.

Nice Eyepiece
Friday, 13 December 2013  |

A very nice eyepiece that is suited to grab and go sessions.
The zoom function is excellent for showing other people night sky objects.
I couldnt live without it.
The 52 degree fov is a bit of a drawback.especially when used with a barlow.
Because of its design mags higher than 13mm usualy results in darkened images. It doesnt bring the full potential out of you scope. But again id recommend one in every ones tackle box
